For those who don't already know, Rewe is a German supermarket chain which is part of the Cologne-based Rewe Group. They have more than 15,000 stores and 211,000 employees worldwide. They are one of the most successful supermarket chains in the highly competitive industry in Germany. From 2015 on, they plan to invest more heavily in their online presence, so same-day is another step in that direction.

Rewe now does same-day delivery in 8 cities. According to internetretailing.net, in Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Mannheim, customers can order any time before 1pm via the website or Rewe app and receive the orders from 5pm that very same day.

Making Grocery Delivery Work

For years, supermarket chains in Germany have been trying to make digital commerce work. Rewe has been quite successful, slowly growing a following with its delivery system. Now the supermarket chain is poised to deliver even more, making delivery more friendly than ever.

Rewe's director of delivery and collection services, Drasko Lasovic said, "In addition to the quality of the products, the wishes of the customers play a central role in the Rewe delivery service. For example, the ’Same Day’ concept was initially tested in selected regions in various pilot projects for a long time in order to ideally coordinate customer benefits and operational processes. As a result, more and more customers can benefit from the added flexibility of ordering fresh food and having it in the fridge four hours later – at no extra cost compared to regular delivery."
